Plus-sizing without breaking anything
Plus-sizing means going up a wheel diameter while dropping the tire's aspect ratio enough to keep the overall diameter close to stock — bigger wheel, shorter sidewall, roughly the same rolling diameter. Done well, your speedometer stays accurate and your clearance barely moves. Done by eyeballing it, you can end up 3–4% off diameter without noticing — enough to throw your speedo off by the same amount (see speedometer error).
The math behind it
Each sidewall's height is section width × aspect ÷ 100, in millimeters. Overall diameter is rim diameter + 2 × sidewall height. Add one inch of rim diameter and, to hold the tire's overall diameter flat, each sidewall has to shrink by half an inch — 12.7mm. Whether that comes from a lower aspect ratio, a narrower section width, or a bit of both is up to whoever built the tire; in practice it's almost always the aspect ratio that drops, since going up a wheel size is usually paired with a wider tire, not a narrower one — which means the aspect ratio has to fall even further to compensate for the extra width too.
Worked example
215/65R16 is a common compact-SUV stock size. Move to a 17in wheel with a slightly wider 225 section and the aspect ratio needs to drop to hold diameter — 225/55R17 gets close:
Under a percent off, and the speedo barely notices. You can find the exact match yourself: solving 225 × aspect ÷ 100 for the sidewall height that keeps 215/65R16's diameter exactly flat on a 17in rim gives an aspect ratio of 56.5 — tires aren't made in that increment, so 55 is the nearest standard size, which is exactly why it's the one that exists on shelves.
"Plus One" doesn't guarantee a match
The tire industry calls a 1-inch-rim jump a "Plus One," but the name only describes the wheel size step — it says nothing about whether the resulting diameter actually holds. 205/55R16 to 225/50R17 is a widely cited textbook Plus One pairing, and it's a real, commonly stocked combination — but run the numbers and it's not diameter-neutral at all:
Nearly 4%, same order of magnitude as skipping plus-sizing entirely and just buying a bigger tire outright. "It's a Plus One" isn't a substitute for checking the actual diameter — the term describes the wheel step, not the outcome.
What plus-sizing does and doesn't fix
What it can improve: a bigger wheel diameter usually means room for bigger brakes underneath, a shorter sidewall flexes less under cornering load for a more direct steering feel, and a wider tire option widens the contact patch.
What it doesn't automatically fix: speedometer accuracy only holds if the diameter actually matches, not just because the rim went up a size (see above). Fender and suspension clearance depends on wheel width and offset too, not diameter alone — see offset and backspacing. And a shorter sidewall means less cushion between the road and the rim regardless of diameter, so ride comfort takes a hit even in a diameter-neutral swap.
